With the UEFA Europa League final looming large there have been debates in the media as to whether the winner should even be allowed Champions League football, but why has this debate just started now!
Now it isn’t lost on me that the two teams are 16th and 15th in the Premier League and usually the teams in the final are still around the top 7 in their respective leagues, however if it wasn’t for these two teams being Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur would these debates still exist. We know the football world loves an underdog story and if this was a Wolves Vs Everton final I’m sure this debate wouldn’t be happening.
What makes this argument even more flawed, is that it is based around the idea that the Champions League is the best reward of winning the Europa League, however for the rest of the year both of these teams have been ridiculed for failing to compete for other trophies. For Tottenham this would be the end of a 17 year drought and for United the first European trophy since 2017. This shows how the possibility of a trophy means more to both clubs than the Champions League football that comes with it.
This will be a massive game for the two clubs and keep an eye out for a post breaking down what to expect from both teams and how they will approach this game.
